Immunotherapy vaccines work to stimulate the body's own immune system.  They help the body recognize and destroy targeted cancers and may help to shrink advanced tumors.  The technology incorporates application of a whole-cell breast cancer vaccine genetically engineered to release GM-CSF, a substance naturally produced by the body that is considered the most powerful stimulant to initiate immune response.

  1. The genetically engineered modification creates a local release of GM-CSF at the precise, targeted site of the stimulating vaccine injection.
  2. A special characteristic of the vaccine is a strong display of known antigens, and presumably others yet to be discovered, which may serve to amplify immune responses targeted more specifically to the patient’s cancer.
  3. The immediate precursor to this genetically engineered vaccine has previously been tested for safety and feasibility – completing Phase I trial without significant toxicity.

Note: One of the 12 patients in the earlier study is alive more than four years after receiving the vaccine; expected survival was 6-12 months for this terminally ill population
